9. Upper floors
Floors two through six are primarily devoted to more than 110,000 square feet of faculty and staff offices and research labs. The modular laboratory environments are well ventilated and utilize centralized lab services, to ensure the future adaptability and flexible evolution of laboratory space as research directions change.
Bioengineering labs, robotics labs, computer science and electrical engineering labs are close to one another, facilitating the cross pollination of ideas. The design encourages collaboration within research labs as well, including among researchers specializing in mechanical engineering, material science, computer science, and applied mathematics.
The SEC has several outdoor patios and greenspace terraces that overlook Allston, Harvard Stadium, and the Boston skyline. The south- and east-facing terraces afford views of Boston and Cambridge.
Graduate student lounge
A glassed-in, graduate student lounge faces the smaller atria and is in close proximity to the research labs. Smaller, two-story atria furnished with meeting tables, serve as common areas between blocks of laboratories.
