A recent MS/MBA program graduate has launched Eco Pet Score, an online community for eco-conscious pet owners. She'd like to recruit some undergrad interns to help with website development, data analysis, and social media. These are unpaid internships currently, requiring 5 hours per week and for the next 3 months. After that we should know if there’s real demand for this service and should commercialize it. If we’re profitable, we’ll hire summer interns for pay.

The Rajpurkar lab at Harvard DBMI
The Rajpurkar lab at Harvard DBMI works on building reliable AI technologies for medical decision making. The lab has developed deep learning algorithms that can read medical images at the level of experts, built large-scale open medical datasets, and demonstrated the positive and negative effects of AI on medical decision making. Current research directions include algorithm development for limited labeled data settings, real-world dataset curation at scale, and the design of effective clinical deployment setups are critical directions. I welcome you to join us in our mission.
We are looking for undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students and research volunteers with a background in any one of artificial intelligence, software engineering, or medicine. By working with our lab, you will build solutions to important problems in medicine. You will learn and sharpen cutting-edge AI through your research, your peers, and reading groups. You will work together in small teams with other scientists, engineers, and clinicians, and receive mentorship to author a research paper.
We expect that students will be able to commit at least 20 hours per week to research and be able to commit at least 6 months of research with the lab. If you are interested in applying, please email your CV and brief description of interest to rajpurkarlab-apply@hms.harvard.edu, specifying whether you are Harvard undergrad or graduate student, volunteer researcher, visiting scholar, or postdoc in the subject line.

Hoffman Lab Undergraduate Research Position
The Hoffman Lab is looking for an undergraduate to build parts of a scanning tunneling microscope, starting in fall 2021. Please note the fast-approaching HCRP deadline of noon on Tues, Sept 14. Physics 90r or Eng. Sci. 91r credit is also a possibility.
No specific background knowledge is necessary. You will be trained and mentored by a postdoc (Wan-Ting Liao) in the Hoffman lab. But you must be willing to work carefully, document well, and think creatively & independently to solve physics & engineering challenges. Minimum commitment: 10 hours/week
Project details:
We are building a scanning 4-probe microscope to image quantum materials with atomic resolution. What does that mean? In contrast to an optical microscope, which takes a instantaneous snapshot of a sample area with wavelength-limited spatial resolution (~100s of nanometers), a scanning probe microscope (SPM) rastors a tiny sensor - such as an atomically sharp needle, or a tiny silicon cantilever - with picometer precision across the surface of a sample, and collects image data one pixel at a time. The SPM can give an atomically-resolved picture of local properties such as surface height, or electron energy levels. But we'd like to correlate these local atomic-scale properties with non-local properties such as resistivity, for which we would need at least two scanning probes, touching down at different points on the sample a few 10s of nanometers apart.
To construct this microscope, we will need to design, prototype, test, and assemble many components including nanoscale stepper motors, vacuum chambers, wiring & electronics, and vibration isolation. We are looking for an undergrad to help with some of these components.
Tasks & skills that could be learned on the job:
• CAD (computer aided design) using Fusion 360
• finite element analysis modeling of vibration modes using Comsol
• metal-machining (lathe, mill, etc.)
• 3d-printing prototypes
• electronic debugging (oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, etc.)
• computer-instrument communication (e.g. labview or python)
• working with ultra-high vacuum equipment
• literature search & review
How to apply: email your CV (including coursework) to both Prof. Hoffman (jhoffman@physics.harvard.edu) & postdoc Wan-Ting Liao (wtliao@g.harvard.edu).
MESH Incubator at Mass General Brigham MESH Teams biodesign program
The MESH Incubator at Mass General Brigham is soliciting your applications for the third year of the MESH Teams biodesign program. Teams is an interdisciplinary program within the MESH Incubator that draws participants from Mass General Brigham, engineering and business schools in Boston, and surrounding industry. Now in its third year, Teams is a ~10-month biodesign program that creates interdisciplinary early-stage companies and teams who collaborate directly with Mass General Brigham faculty to engineer solutions for pressing clinical needs. To date, over 8 companies, all led by one or more Mass General Brigham clinicians or researchers, have been formed directly in this program, and over 100 multi-disciplinary innovators have participated in our workshops.
We are currently accepting applications for technical lead and team member roles.
- As a Technical Team Lead, you will be working closely with your clinician adviser to understand the problem. From then on you will build a team to solve this problem.
- As a Team Member, you will work closely with your team lead on an innovation project. Specifically, you may be involved in any of the activities that a startup needs (eg. problem validation, customer development, market research, solution development, prototyping, etc.)
The Technical Team Lead role is particularly suitable for advanced graduate students or post docs, however, we will gladly review applications from anyone with a solid background and interest. Furthermore, you are welcome to submit an application for both roles.
To apply to the program please submit your application at https://forms.gle/CaHcvgVv78tBxo7S8. The priority deadline is 9/20. All those accepted into the program will have the opportunity to enroll in other MESH programs at no cost, including the on-demand certificate-granting MESH Core Healthcare Innovation Bootcamp, and exclusive complimentary access to the Innovation MESH Network, an online network of over 650 top innovators across Mass General Brigham and major Boston Institutions (MIT, Harvard) ready to collaborate with you, your team, and provide career mentorship. The MESH Network includes the ability to search innovators including MDs, PhDs, investors, engineers, business leads, etc. by specialty, innovation domain, job title, as well as the ability to directly message these innovators at your convenience.
