MS&ME PhD Committee Meetings
The faculty expect PhD students to meet with their research committees at least annually following the qualifying exam. These meetings are for the student's benefit in order to connect with and receive better advising from their committee members.
The student is to provide the committee with a ~1-page pre-reading summary, 2 weeks in advance. In the meeting, the student presents briefly based on the summary: accomplishments, plus any issues. After a discussion the advisor leaves the room so that the student and committee members can also discuss the student/advisor relationship and the climate in the research group.
The meeting is chaired by a committee member who is not the advisor and should proceed even if one member cannot attend. There is no formal assessment or tracking other than that the meeting took place.
