BioSTAR: Bioengineering Science, Technology And Research

BIOSTAR: BIOENGINEERING SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND RESEARCH

Winter Session Program in Bioengineering at SEAS for First Year and Sophomore Harvard Students!

Dates: January 21 - 24, 2025 (Tuesday - Friday), 10 am to 3 pm

Application Link: bit.ly/biostar-2025

Application Deadline: Friday December 15, 2024, applications will be accepted on a rolling basis (12 slots!)

The BioSTAR program is led by the Active Learning Labs in the Science and Engineering Complex (SEC) in Allston. Students will work with mouse cancer cells, learning basic tissue culture techniques and growing the cells in both 2D and 3D. Anti-cancer drug development, research, and treatment will be covered, and students will see firsthand the importance of 3D cultures for drug development. Methods including cell culture, microfluidics, fluorescence microscopy, and viability assays will be covered.

Program Overview
The BioSTAR Program Curriculum will cover:

  • Aseptic techniques and methods of preventing mammalian cell culture contamination

  • Understanding significance of culture media for cell growth

  • Culturing of mammalian cell lines as 2D and 3D cultures

  • Drug delivery techniques

  • Cell staining and visualization: Light, Fluorescence and Scanning Electron Microscopes

  • Assays to measure cell viability
