Suo elected to American Academy of Arts & Sciences

Zhigang Suo, the Allen E. and Marilyn M. Puckett Professor of Mechanics and Materials at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) has been elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.

Suo is among 250 members elected in 2024 — including 15 Harvard faculty — recognized for “their excellence and invited to uphold the Academy’s mission of engaging across disciplines and divides.” 

Suo studies small materials structures and the mechanics of nanofabrication, self-assembly, and durability. Suo and his students aim to create scientific models of small-scale processes that have significant engineering consequences in microelectronics, large-area electronics, soft materials, active materials, and lithium-ion batteries. 

After completing a BS in Engineering Mechanics at Xi'an Jiaotong University in China, Suo received his MS and PhD in Engineering Science from Harvard. He joined the Harvard faculty in 2003. 

Suo is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and the National Academy of Sciences (NAS).

Founded in 1780, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences is both an honorary society that recognizes and celebrates the excellence of its members and an independent research center convening leaders from across disciplines, professions, and perspectives to address significant challenges.

Induction ceremonies for new members will take place in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in September 2024.

Frank J. Doyle, former John A. Paulson Dean at SEAS, is also among this year’s elected members.
