Juliet Nwagwu Ume-Ezeoke, S.B. ‘21, and Jimmy Lin, A.B. ‘22, have been awarded Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans, which financially supports immigrants and children of immigrants as they pursue graduate studies.
Two alumni of the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) have been awarded Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans, which financially supports immigrants and children of immigrants as they pursue graduate studies. Juliet Nwagwu Ume-Ezeoke, S.B. ‘21, and Jimmy Lin, A.B. ‘22, will both receive up to $90,000 in funding as they pursue Ph.D. degrees at other universities.
“Immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees have and continue to make our nation stronger,” said Fellowship Director Craig Harwood. “The diverse perspectives and approaches that each Fellow this year, and the many who have come before them, brings to their fields and our society is remarkable and inspiring.”
Ume-Ezeoke was born in Nigeria, and her family also lived in Senegal before emigrating to the United States. She earned a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering at SEAS and is now studying civil and environmental engineering at Stanford University.
Lin’s parents moved from the U.S. to China before he was born. He concentrated in mathematics at Harvard with a secondary in computer science. He’s now a Ph.D. candidate in economics at MIT.
The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship began 25 years ago. The program had selected five Fellows from SEAS before this year. One of them, Trang Luu, a 2022 Fellow, is currently enrolled in the M.S./M.B.A. program run jointly by SEAS and Harvard Business School.
