Rediet Abebe, S.M. ’16 (applied math), who was the first black woman to earn a computer science Ph.D. at Cornell University in 2019, was highlighted in the Cornell Chronicle.

The article discusses Abebe’s research on algorithms and AI, with a focus on equity and justice concerns. She designs and analyzes algorithmic, computational, discrete optimization, and network-based techniques to improve access to opportunity for historically underserved and disadvantaged communities.

Currently a junior fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows, Abebe will join the faculty of the University of California, Berkeley, as an assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science.
