Computer scientist and applied physicist join SEAS

The Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) welcomes two new distinguished researchers to the ranks of its faculty.

Ariel Procaccia, the Gordon McKay Professor of Computer Science, joins SEAS from Carnegie Mellon University, where he was an associate professor of computer science. Procaccia’s research explores the intersections of AI, algorithms, economics, and society. He is especially interested in the use of social choice theory and game theory for resource allocation and collective decision making.

Procaccia received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and was a Center for Research in Computation and Society fellow at SEAS. Procaccia has received the 2015 Computers and Thought Award from the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI), a Sloan Research Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the 2020 Social Choice and Welfare Prize.

Max Prigozhin, Assistant Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology and of Applied Physics, joins SEAS and the Departments of Molecular & Cellular Biology from Stanford, where he was a postdoctoral fellow. Prigozhin’s research focuses on developing molecular probes and instrumentation for multicolor and time-resolved electron microscopy. These tools will be used to understand the nanoscale protein and membrane dynamics of cell signaling in nanoscale resolution.

Prigozhin received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He has joint faculty appointment with the Division of Science and SEAS, with an affiliation with the Harvard Quantum Initiative.
