Kats honored by IEEE Photonics Society

Alumnus recognized for outstanding technical contributions to photonics

Mikhail Kats

Mikhail Kats, S.M. ’10, Ph.D. ’14 (applied physics) has received the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Photonics Society Young Investigator Award.

The award honors an individual who has made outstanding technical contributions to photonics prior to his or her 35th birthday. Kats was recognized for “contributions in the fields of nanophotonics and optical materials, especially for metasurfaces, optics with phase-transition materials, and thermal-emission engineering.”

Associate Professor and Dugald C. Jackson Faculty Scholar in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Wisconsin–Madison, Kats’ research interests include optics and photonics; plasmonics; optoelectronics; light harvesting; device physics; and nanoscale science.
