Gaglani’s medical education startup experiences rapid growth

The online medical and health education company Osmosis, co-founded by Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Science alumnus, Shiv Gaglani, A.B. ’10 (engineering sciences) has grown at a fast rate and garnered significant recognition since the company was highlighted in a SEAS article three months ago.

In April, Gaglani gave a TEDx Talk describing the story and founding of Osmosis, providing an in depth and extremely personal account, not only of what Osmosis is but how, and most importantly, why it came to be. Describing the changing world and the increasing demand for medical professionals now and in the future, Gaglani emphasized the need for a more comprehensive framework for medical education that can be tailored to each individuals’ needs, as well as be more cost effective. Osmosis, he said, fulfills this need by providing both current and future health care professionals with an extensive library of educational videos, flash cards, and more.

Within this same month, Osmosis surpassed 1 million YouTube subscribers and, by May, during which they launched “Osmosis Around the World,” had reached a global audience, providing learning opportunities to people in nations such as Rwanda, Iran, and the Philippines.

Perhaps the most significant development, Osmosis has raised more than $4 million in funding from a myriad of investors, led by Felicis Ventures, in the past month.

“By reimagining medical education, Osmosis is addressing a critical impending global crisis: the need to develop and retrain tens of millions of healthcare professionals over the next decade to meet growing demand,” Aydin Senkut, founder and managing partner of Felicis Ventures, said recently in a TechCrunch article.

This influx of funding and rapid expansion of users within a period of three months is a testament to the importance of Osmosis, and puts the company well on its way to achieving its goal of educating 1 billion people by 2025.
