Choon Fong Shih, Ph.D. ’73 (applied mathematics) has received the Centennial Medal from the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS).
The highest honor bestowed by GSAS, the award honors distinguished alumni who have made fundamental and lasting contributions to knowledge, their disciplines, their colleagues, and society.
During his distinguished career, Shih served as head of the Fracture Research Group at the General Electric Research Lab, taught at Brown University, served as president of Singapore’s Institute of Materials Research and Engineering and, most recently, as the first president of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia, a university he helped establish.
