Mitchell Smooke, S.M. ’78, Ph.D. ’78 (applied mathematics) has been appointed acting dean of the Yale School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
Smooke, Strathcona Professor of Mechanical Engineering and professor of applied physics, assumed the position on Jan. 1. He has served as acting dean of engineering once before, in fall 2000, and also served as chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science twice during his tenure at Yale.
A widely recognized expert in computational studies of combustion, Smooke is currently investigating methods of quantifying combustion-generated nano-particles from land- and air-based systems.
