Harvard first in Biomedical Engineering in new ranking of world universities

Harvard’s program in Biomedical Engineering, housed at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), has been rated the top program in the Academic Ranking of World Universities, considered the most influential international ranking of research universities.

In addition to being rated the number one university overall in the so-called Shanghai rankings, Harvard earned the top spot in 18 of the 52 subject areas rated, including not only Biomedical Engineering, but also the related fields of Life Sciences, Medicine, Biotechnology, Biological Sciences, Human Biological Sciences, and Medical Technology.

SEAS offers degrees at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Biomedical engineering research at SEAS focuses on a number of areas, including cell and tissue engineering, biomaterials, drug delivery, robotics, imaging, biomechanics, and neuroengineering.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) is published by the independent ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. It uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff who have received Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of highly cited researchers selected by Thomson Reuters, the number of articles published in the journals Nature and Science, the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index, and per capita performance of a university. More than 1,200 universities are ranked by ARWU every year and the best 500 are published.
