Design and Fabrication Instructional Shop

The Design & Fabrication Instructional Machine Shop is located in room LL1.245 of the SEC. This state of the art facility houses a variety of high precision fabrication equipment such as manual/CNC mills and lathes.  Other CNC machinery include a waterjet, plasma cutter and laser cutter.  In addition, there are drill presses, vertical/horizontal band saws, sanding and grinding tools, hydraulic/arbor presses and a MIG & TIG welder. This space provides an ideal learning environment for SEAS students, staff, and faculty as they actively participate in transforming their two dimensional designs into three dimensional reality.

The Design and Fabrication Instruction team works closely with students, staff and faculty to help support SEAS course initiatives and research projects. Our services include safety training on all of the equipment in the shop as well as basic to comprehensive instruction on the operation of each machine. Most importantly, we assist students as they navigate through the development of design processes from concept, to drawing, to prototype and final product.

  • Examples of courses & programs in which we support student projects include:

    • ES96: Engineering problem solving & design project
    • ES100: 1 year long capstone project course for Harvard seniors
    • ES227: Medical device project based mechanical design course
    • Master in Design Engineering (MDE) program
    • MS/MBA Engineering Science program
